Curry in a hurry

By CASEY NEILL

STUDENTS at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School brought a swashbuckling pirate tale to the stage last week.
Comedy musical Pirates of the Curry Bean centres on the Perriwinkle family, who ran the Squirty Squid Tavern. Their father was lost at sea many years ago.
“The family then finds themselves embroiled with the Pirates of the Curry Bean, ending up in the mysterious island of Lumbago to be executed by Chief Wonga,” director and performing arts teacher Victoria Gelberg said.
But when Pearl Periwinkle slapped him across the face with a fish, he remembered he was the long-lost Stanley Periwinkle, also known as notorious pirate Captain Swaggersword.
Ms Gelberg said the performance at Monash University’s Alexander Theatre on 4 September went “fantastically well”.
Narrator Sai, known as Deadeye on stage, learnt his 71 lines in just two weeks.
“Every night I would practice for one hour,” he said.
