Windscreen wiped out

A KODAK moment for a bus load of Japanese tourists was no laughing matter for Greater Dandenong Police this week.
A semi-trailer travelling along the Monash Freeway between Heatherton and Stud roads in Dandenong lost part of its load, possibly a brake hub, that then smashed into the windscreen of a bus travelling behind.
A piece of metal then bounced up and went straight through the passenger side of the bus’ windscreen, hitting a barrier in front of the passenger seat.
Greater Dandenong’s Traffic Management Unit immediately urged motorists to secure their loads, and said it was lucky no one was injured in the incident.
Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Denton said if the object had not hit the barrier it could have easily struck an unsuspecting passenger.
“Fortunately there were no injuries caused by the incident,” he said.
“However, there was a huge potential for a more serious outcome.
“Everyone was extremely lucky to escape unharmed and this serves as a timely reminder to all motorists about the consequences of not having a secure load on your truck or trailer.
“Failing to properly secure objects is extremely dangerous for all road users and this week’s incident is a prime example of the need for motorists to be more responsible.”
Police are currently seeking witnesses to Monday’s incident and anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
