ASYLUM seekers and new migrants are becoming a key part of the Salvation Army’s volunteer base in Dandenong.
Dandenong Salvation Army corps officer Captain Stuart McGifford has partnered with settlement service AMES.
“To see if we could provide meaningful work experience for those who are yet to receive work rights, while at the same time meeting needs in the community,” he said.
“So far it’s been great. The guys – mostly men at the moment – really pitch in and get things done.
“We are achieving so much more together and it’s an enriching experience for our long-standing staff and volunteers to hear stories and meet people from different cultural backgrounds.
“Iranians, Tamils, Iraqis, Afghans and others continue to be a blessing to our organisation and to our community.”
