Close to their hearts

By CASEY NEILL

DANDENONG seniors have done their bit for Knitted Knockers.
The charity provides free knitted or crocheted breast prostheses for women who’ve had mastectomies or other breast surgery.
Wallara Seniors Group raised $400 for the cause at an annual fund-raising morning tea and last Wednesday 15 July presented a cheque to Knitted Knockers founder and president Cheryl Webster.
Support coach Leanne Mclellan heard about Cheryl and approached one of her clients, Janet, who’d undergone a mastectomy.
“She wasn’t interested in a traditional prosthesis and she loves to knit. It just went from there,” she said.
“We had a fund-raising morning tea at a house where Janet lives, which is within Wallara.
“Cheryl from Knitted Knockers was absolutely over the moon.
“They do rely solely on donations.”
Cheryl presented Janet and another resident with their own Knitted Knockers.
“They have mild intellectual disabilities. They are very visual,” Leanne said.
“Cheryl actually whipped hers out and showed them.”
The group plans to raise money for Knitted Knockers again next year, but hopes to double the dollars.
