POLICE spent last Friday evening patrolling the Dandenong railway line in an effort to crack down on anti-social behaviour.
Operation Fuel focused on detecting alcohol-related offences on the public transport system. One person was arrested on drug-related matters, and another for possessing graffiti implements.
Police also questioned 15 people over alcohol-related offences and four for ticket evasion.
Sergeant Richard Coulson from the transit police said the night was reasonably quiet.
Such operations were also run on Saturday nights and the number of offences usually increased with the larger number of people.
“A visible police presence acts as a deterrent to some would-be troublemakers and the general public likes to see police working the trains,” Sgt Coulson said.
“Every commuter has the right to feel safe when travelling on public transport and through this operation, police aim to continue to improve safety and security for everyone.”
The operation coincided with Operation Barry, which focused on Dandenong, Springvale and Noble Park railway stations last Thursday.
During that operation, conducted between 9am and 5pm, transit and local police, and the dog squad, patrolled the stations. Two people checked by patrols were found to have outstanding warrants.
Police said such operations would continue at various times and locations to deter anti-social behaviour on public transport.
