Dandenong’s Hazara community celebrated Refugee Week with music, dancing – and a word from political candidates.
Refugee Council of Australia-appointed Refugee Week ambassador Hayatullah Rahimi organised the Sunday 19 June event at the Russian Community Centre on Kirkham Road, Dandenong South.
Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan attended on behalf of the city’s mayor.
The dozens of guests heard from Bruce candidates ahead of the Saturday 2 July election – Helen Kroger from the Liberal Party, the ALP’s Julian Hill and Greens candidate Stefanie Bauer.
Mr Rahimi, Omid Cultural Association president, also addressed the audience.
He ran a similar event last year.
Talib Muzafari performed traditional music on the guitar-like instrument known as dambora, and Taqi Khan Azra sang.
Eclectic mix of music, dancing and electioneering
