Citizens stop drink-driver

Quick-thinking locals restrained a Dandenong man who tried to flee a crash scene.
State Highway Patrol police were called to the incident in Potter Street, Dandenong, about 1pm on Thursday 14 July.
Members of the public had stopped a 30-year-old from driving away from the scene.
He fled on foot when police arrived, but the officers followed and found him in a nearby unit block.
Police allege he was driving on a disqualified international driver’s licence, returned a positive result to a preliminary breath test, and recorded a .224 blood alcohol concentration in an evidentiary breath test.
They impounded his car for 30 days and it will cost him $1027 in fees to get it back.
The man is also expected to be charged on summons with traffic offences including driving while disqualified, drink driving, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
Senior Constable Gavin Devine said it was an impressive effort from the quick-thinking members of the public who assisted.
“We’re enormously lucky that no-one was injured during the collision and police would like to thank all those who prevented him driving again,” he said.
