WORKS on a multi-million dollar Keysborough Secondary College revamp and amalgamation kicked off this week.
Stage one of the state-funded $20 million project at campuses at Isaac and Janine roads began on Tuesday, with a sod turning by Lyndhurst MP Tim Holding.
It includes state-of-the-art junior villages and will boast northern facades to maximise solar use, a thermal labyrinth to regulate temperatures, and thermal chimneys.
Keysborough Secondary College principal Heather Lindsay said when completed, the new facilities would be a major boost for the community.
“We currently have 1800 students but (with the new facilities) expect that to grow rapidly,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity for the students to learn in new spaces. It’s also going to be an ecologically sustainable design, so there are many positive environmental factors included.”
The Junior Villages are expected to be complete by the end of 2011.
Ms Lindsay said the school also secured $1.97 million from the Federal Government for a science centre, which is due to be completed by the end of this year.
The works, or Keysborough/Springvale Regeneration Project, is an amalgamation of four schools into one of two sites and when completed will cater for 3200 students.
