BRIDGE beams extending over the Dandenong railway line are a clear sign that works on the George Street Bridge are progressing well.
The bridge is one of the main features of the Victorian Government’s $290 million Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative – a partnership between VicUrban and the City of Greater Dandenong.
The project involves extending George Street Bridge to Cheltenham Road via the new bridge, which will span the railway line and Foster Street.
The bridge will boast a two-way road, pedestrian and bicycle access, street lighting and artwork mounted on the sides.
The bridge will be the new gateway into central Dandenong and will make the town centre more accessible to locals and visitors, Dandenong MP John Pandazopoulos said.
“Once complete, people living off Cheltenham Road will benefit from convenient access to shops and services on the other side of the railway line.
“Drivers, cyclists and walkers will have an alternative route into town and this will take pressure off other key entry points to Dandenong,” he said.
Mr Pandazopoulos said the recent works were a significant project milestone.
“Beams spanning the railway tracks were placed last weekend, which is a significant milestone as both sides of the bridge have now come together” he said.
“Work happened in the early hours of the morning after the last train for the evening to avoid disruption and ensure the safety of all workers.”
Beams were placed over Foster Street in late-January and the ramps on both side of the bridge are almost complete. Work will continue over the coming months on deck construction and barrier installation to prepare the bridge for the new road surface and footpaths.
The $29.5 million George Street Bridge is on schedule for completion later this year and has been funded by the Victorian Government.
