DANDENONG Rangers playing-coach Larissa Anderson praised her charges for their “amazing heart” in Saturday night’s SEABL championship win over Launceston.
The Lady Rangers lifted the SEABL women’s trophy for just the second time after a 85-70 victory at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
The close-nit Dandenong side jumped out to a 26-13 quarter-time lead and was never really threatened, despite the presence of Tornadoes centre and Australian Opal Liz Cambage (30 points, 10 rebounds) in the paint.
Cambage, a former Dandenong junior, made a strong start to the game, but became frustrated by the defensive pressure of experienced Ranger Alison Downie and eventually fouled out.
Downie scored 19 points and was awarded the Barbara Barton Medal for best on court, while Steph Cumming (20), Clare Papavs (13), Amelia Todhunter (10) and Anderson (12) all made strong contributions.
A jubilant Anderson, who was recently named as the SEABL women’s coach of the year, told SEABL TV she was extremely proud of her team. “We won the way we’ve done it all season, and that’s as a team,” she said.
Meanwhile, the SEABL men’s championship was won by the Geel-ong Supercats, who defeated Bendigo by 13 in the grand final.
