New RSL chief

By Lia Bichel
DANDENONG – Cranbourne RSL has welcomed its new president.
Alan Harper was sworn into his new role last Thursday, two days before resigning president Donald Williams Shield died.
Mr Harper was a British Army gunner in the Royal Artillery from 1955 until 1962.
His first posting was to Germany. He then stationed in Korea as a peacekeeper, and after four weeks was shipped to Malaya where served alongside the Australian Army for two years.
In 1968, at the age of 32, Mr Harper emigrated from England to Australia.
Mr Harper joined the RSL 15 years ago after retiring as a coach driver in Dandenong.
He was on the RSL committee for 10 years and was vice-president for four years.
He now lives in Narre Warren South with his partner Heather but continues to volunteer his time as a bus driver on day trips and a lot of his time at the RSL.
“I enjoy it here. I enjoy meeting new people, and the camaraderie of the club,” Mr harper said.
John Filmer from the RSL said friends and family mourned the loss of Mr Shields, but were pleased Mr Harper could step up to the job.
“It’s unfortunate we lost our past president, but the move means another good man is taking over,” he said.
“As Mr Shields was previously vice-president, the move is a natural transition. With his guidance, I am sure we will continue to be one of the strongest RSLs in Victoria.”
John Lawton is now vice-president and Judy Murdoch JP has taken Mr Lawton’s previous role of assistant secretary.
