Springvale Community Hub named

The $50-million-plus Springvale library and community precinct will not be named Lucky Cat Square.

Nor other public suggestions such as Spring Centre, Springvale Relaxation Centre, Star of Knowledge Inclusion Community Hub and Together Space.

The Hon. Robert Hawke Springvale Community Civic Building – in honour of the late Prime Minister – will not come to fruition.

Instead, councillors endorsed the recommended moniker Springvale Community Hub at a council meeting on 10 February.

Feedback from 220 community surveys found strong support for naming the precinct as a whole but a roughly 50-50 split for naming the new library-exhibition-and-meeting-room building individually.

Of five options, Springvale Community Hub gained 52 per cent support from the public.

The respondents’ preferred name for the building was Springvale Library – which will be identified on way-finding signage and library publicity material.

No “large signage” will be placed on the building’s exterior to indicate a building name, a council report stated.

There was some public support for the use of an indigenous-cultural name, as an alternative.

Council officers will consult with Aboriginal Land Councils on a possible indigenous name for a significant exhibition space or hall in the building.

The hub, which includes a landscaped park and recreation space at the front of Springvale Town Hall, is expected to open in mid-2020.
