FOOTBALL fanatics are already licking their lips.
The Southern Football League (SFL) has released the draws for its three divisions and the footy is scheduled to kick back into action on 14 April.
But that date is subject to change.
Drought-stricken football grounds need rain, and plenty of it, to ensure the SFL season begins on time.
The SFL management board met last week to discuss contingency plans in the event that local councils, or even Football Victoria, recommend the start of the season be delayed.
Recently appointed CEO Phil Stevens said delaying the start of the season was the league’s last resort.
“It will only happen if there is an absolute necessity to delay the season,” he said.
“We don’t want to confuse clubs or players, but developing a contingency plan just in case was essential.”
Stevens said clubs were not allowed to train on grounds until the start of March, but added that most SFL grounds are in fair condition.
“If Football Victoria makes a recommendation to delay the start of our season due to the lack of rain, I would predict that would apply to a number of leagues and not just the SFL,” he said.
This week Star has included the division two fixture, and round one throws up some interesting clashes.
Second division newcomer Parkmore Pirates will have to prove itself against the success-hungry Lyndale Pumas, and Dingley will make its SFL debut against Moorabbin.
