Language demand prompts call

GROWING demand in Springvale from people wanting to learn to speak English has led to a call for more volunteer English tutors.
The Springvale Neighbourhood Literacy Centre needs new volunteers to cope with the 300 students seeking to learn the English language.
Centre coordinator Rebekah O’Loughlin said the centre provided literacy programs for the community’s adults, through English as a Second Language programs and a host of other courses.
“We have conversation classes run by volunteers and also one-to-one volunteers to help on an individual basis,” she said.
She said the centre did not demand a lot from its volunteers and was grateful for any time they could provide.
“We are always looking for volunteers; it is an ongoing thing,” she said.
“We ask them for a six-month commitment, but students generally need someone longer than six months.
“They don’t need any special qualifications; they just need to be able to converse in English.
“We will offer them training for two hours a week over six weeks.”
Ms O’Loughlin said volunteers were expected to help students at least one hour a week, and would only meet in public places such as libraries to conduct tutorials.
Ms O’Loughlin said students learning English took part in a variety of activities, including creating a mosaic that hangs in the centre and welcomes people in a multiplicity of languages.
In addition to English volunteers, the centre is also looking for new participants for its tai chi and women’s massage classes.
To become an English volunteer tutor, or find out more about upcoming classes, phone the centre on 9574 6399.
