NEW bins at Dandenong Stadium have boosted the facility’s recycling volume.
The City of Greater Dandenong Council this week announced that the stadium, which installed the bins last year, was now recycling 55 per cent of its total waste.
The council said it was a significant increase on the 26 per cent being recycled prior to the recycle bins’ installation in September.
The council had used a $30,000 grant from Sustainability Victoria and the Alcoa Foundation to install 30 recycling and rubbish bins throughout the facility.
City of Greater Dandenong waste and cleansing business unit leader Phillip Robertson said the council was delighted with the figures.
“Council is committed to reducing litter in our city by recycling, and this project is another step towards achieving that goal,” he said.
“The Dandenong Stadium generates a high number of recyclables such as drink bottles and cans.
“With 676,000 people visiting the facility each year, it was an ideal location to launch the project.
“There is the added bonus that many young people also use the facility – they represent the recycling future of Australia.
“By instilling recycling values early in the lives of our community members, we hope they will carry this knowledge into adulthood and one day teach their children just how important and easy recycling is.”
