Council Labor block vows a united stand

SEVEN out of 11 councillors elected at last week’s Greater Dandenong Council elections are members of the Labor Party.
Peter Brown, Loi Truong, Youhorn Chea, Angela Long, Jim Memeti, Pinar Yesil and Roz Blades said they were humbled to be elected as community representatives.
Red Gum councillor Jim Memeti said the coup would allow the council to unite on important issues for the community.
“The residents of Greater Dandenong voted this way because that is who they want in council,” Mr Memeti said.
“We have all been up front, open and transparent with the community.
“I even used the Labor Party logo and I received more votes than I have ever got before,” Mr Memeti said.
He said in recent years the council had let down the community on particular services that were important to residents.
“We have, in the past, lost key services such as the mobile library and drug action groups,” Mr Memeti said.
“With a united council we will be able to work for the community.”
When asked by the Star whether the Labor councillors would work together with the four other councillors he said that would be no problem.
“They are our colleagues and we want to work hand in hand with them,” Mr Memeti said.
“A united council is best for the community.”
