Stars settle for second

By Stuart Teather
THE Southern Stars claimed just their second win of the State League One season with a 3-2 victory against the Springvale White Eagles on Saturday, keeping their faint hope of avoiding relegation alive.
But the more likely outcome is that the Stars booked the White Eagles a ticket into State League Two next year, having already all but secured one themselves.
The two teams sit four points into the relegation zone with two rounds remaining, and would need to win their final two encounters to have any hope of surviving. The Stars took control of the match early on, registering two goals before half-time to put the White Eagles on the back foot.
Aware their season was on the line, the White Eagles fought back with goals to Gordon Mrdic and Kruno Stanisic, but the Stars had their measure with a third to secure the points.
Elsewhere, South Springvale won the local State League Two South East derby with Heatherton United 3-1, keeping their season alive, while Dandenong City defeated Knox 1-0.
In State League Three South East action Noble Park United crushed Sandringham City 3-1 and Springvale City’s clash with Berwick City was called off in the 84th minute, when Springvale was leading 1-0.
