GREATER Dandenong residents are invited to the launch of what organisers expect will be one of the most memorable events of 2010 – the Cancer Council Victoria’s Greater Dandenong Relay For Life.
The launch, on Monday, 19 October, will be an opportunity for residents to discover how they can help shape this important community event.
“Relay For Life will be a chance for everybody in the community to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against cancer,” Greater Dandenong Relay For Life volunteer manager Alan Collier said.
“Each year’s event is different. There will be new stories of triumph to celebrate and memories of loved ones lost to share. As we do each year, we will also honour locals who have ever experienced cancer.”
He said everybody was invited to the launch to learn how they could best take part in Relay For Life and help fight back against cancer.
Greater Dandenong Relay For Life will take place at Sandown Greyhound Track next year over the weekend of 20 and 21 March. During the event, groups of locals will take turns walking or running through the night to raise funds for the Cancer Council’s world-class cancer research, education and support programs.
“People will bring their tents and camp overnight as a community. There will be free entertainment, games for the kids and even spot prizes,” Mr Collier said.
Ceremonies will also be held throughout the event to honour locals who have been touched by cancer.
“At dusk, we will line the track with candles and messages dedicated to loved ones who have faced cancer. This is always one of the most moving reminders of why we fight cancer,” Mr Collier said.
Each year, 565 Greater Dandenong residents are diagnosed with cancer.
The launch will take place at 7pm on 19 October, at Sandown Greyhound Club, Lightwood Road, Springvale.
