Girl hit by taxi

A 10-YEAR-OLD girl suffered serious head injuries after she was hit by a taxi last week.
Advanced life support paramedics and the air ambulance helicopter were called to Heatherton Road at around 3pm on 7 January.
Ambulance clinical support officer David Kervin said the girl was crossing the road with her father when she was struck by a taxi.
“Witnesses have told us that after she was hit by the car she was thrown into the air and then hit her head on the road,” Mr Kervin said.
“It was quite a chaotic scene when paramedics arrived. The girl was lapsing in and out of consciousness and clearly in significant pain with several deep cuts to her head.
“Her father and other bystanders were also visibly distressed.”
Mr Kervin said given the potential for spinal injuries, the girl was fitted with a neck support, put on a spinal board and assessed.
“We placed a drip into her arm to give her fluids and pain relief before taking her to a nearby reserve to meet the air ambulance helicopter,” Mr Kervin said.
“Intensive care paramedics placed her into an induced coma and inserted a breathing tube into her lungs to take over breathing for her.”
Police said the girl was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
