CITIZEN of the Year John Filmer credited the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL for providing an outlet for him to help people in need.
Mr Filmer, 76, was awarded the title for his endless contribution and overwhelming desire to inspire members of his local community.
“I am extremely honoured,” he said.
Mr Filmer has been actively involved in the community since 1970, having worked for the City of Springvale as a town planner and representing many residents as a councillor. He currently has an active role in the Dandenong Cranbourne RSL.
Mr Filmer co-ordinates a team of volunteers who visit veterans at three local hospitals and 11 aged care facilities.
He also makes many personal visits to veterans, demonstrating his commitment to ensuring everyone feels part of a community.
Mr Filmer is a passionate believer that everyone is equal and should be treated as such, no matter their race or religion.
He said the people at the RSL had provided him with an opportunity to make his contributions.
“The RSL gives me the opportunity to do what I do, I couldn’t do it without their support,” Mr Filmer said.
“I accept it on behalf of the hundreds of volunteers who help in the City of Greater Dandenong every year.”
