DETECTIVES are warning people about an email scam in which recipients are threatened with violence if they don’t pay up.
Investigators at the e-crime squad have received several inquiries over the past fortnight from concerned recipients of the “hitman” scams.
Police said the emails were often sent to randomly generated email addresses or addresses extracted from people’s computer address books.
In both cases, they do not know the email has been sent to a live email address until the recipient responds.
The public can also report the emails online to SCAMwatch by visiting www.scamwatch.gov.au
