SPRINGVALE heads into the Christmas break with an impressive 11-4 record after defeating the lowly Waverley Wildcats at Napier Park on Sunday.
The Lions sneaked in the win before rain intervened.
“We didn’t play that well,” coach Mick Wearne said. “We played for only 68 minutes; you’ve got to play at least 65 minutes for a legal game. It was only four innings, but we won, which is the main thing.”
When the rains did eventuate, Springvale was leading 4-1, which was the final margin.
“Normally, if we’re in front after 60 minutes, they call it off or if we’re behind, it goes to 65 minutes and we lose,” he said.
For the Lions, Neil Cavanaugh and former ABL rookie of the year Myles Barnden scored two runs each. Scott Baillee pitched well for the Lions
With the hard work reaping results in the first half of the year, Springvale goes into the new year confident.
“We’ve got ourselves in a reasonably good position,” Wearne said. “We’ve got a tough run after Christmas with four tough games in a row, so that will be make or break for us.”
Springvale hosts Moorabbin on January 16.
The women’s teams had a mixed weekend.
The Pumas defeated Malvern 5-4 and the Lions drew with Doncaster in Division One.
In Division Two, Springvale succumbed to undefeated Werribee 10-3.
