The Federal Labor MP for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus, announced a $703,000 grant at the Dandenong Market on Friday for the city to support an initiative called Active Council, Active Community.
Mr Dreyfus said Dandenong was one of only seven Victorian councils to receive the funding, out of 72 applicants.
“We know that preventative health measures work and I am pleased that the Federal Government is supporting Greater Dandenong Council to implement innovative programs to educate people on the serious dangers of being overweight,” Mr Dreyfus said.
“It’s an exciting initiative and I am looking forward to working with the council.”
The program aims to reduce excess weight and obesity in the community through the introduction of a Dandenong Market fresh food hub, activity ambassadors, community-wide targeted programs and activities, an EatSmart nutrition program and WalkSmart walking groups.
Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said the money would be well spent in the community.
“I can assure you, this money will be put to good use in the City of Greater Dandenong, helping make our community more active, healthy and happy,” Cr Blades said.
The project will focus on supporting residents over 65 years old, the indigenous community, new migrants and the unemployed.
“This is an exciting project that will help the Greater Dandenong community make positive changes to become healthier, happier and more active,” Cr Blades said.
