THE public is the key to solving a shooting during a soccer training session in Springvale last week.
A soccer played was struck just above the eye with a pellet while he was training at Heatherton United Soccer Club about 7.40pm on Thursday.
The 24-year-old from Hampton Park suffered substantial swelling and bruising to his eye and was taken to the Monash Medical Centre for treatment.
Detective Senior Constable Michael Silva said it could have had a worse outcome.
“The man and a number of other people heard what they thought was a gun shot and fireworks,” he said.
“He was struck with a projectile and has fallen to the ground.
“It could have been anyone of those people on the field.”
Investigators believe the shot was fired from a nearby reserve although the weapon or location is still unknown.
Det Sen Const Silva said the police were relying on the public to come forward with information.
“Until we track people down and find out what weapon was used, we don’t know if something like this could happen again,” he said.
“It could have been a prank or dare that went wrong and there is nothing to suggest it was a targeted attack.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
