THERE was no iota of love lost between Keysborough and Doveton, with a tough affair only ceased by the final siren – the Doves ahead 15.10 (100) to the Burras 11.8 (74).
Keysborough couldn’t negate Doveton forward Shannon Stocco, who drilled five crucial goals.
Davor Rajic stood tall at the other end, with three of his own, while Daniel Morland impressed with two goals and a swag of possessions well aided by Jo Scata and Corey Wilkinson.
Keysborough sits eighth and hosts cellar dweller Hampton Park on 1 June following the VCFL championship game between Casey-Cardinia and Wimmera.
SFL
Springvale Districts narrowly prevailed over Hampton, holding on to claim a 8.12 (60) to 6.9 (45) win. Kicking away in the third, Springvale extended the lead to 36 points before a last-quarter Hampton comeback. The Demons scored a single behind in the last term, but held onto a 15-point lead at the siren. Rob Johnston was brilliant with six goals while Lance Baptist was best afield. Districts sit in fifth and face last-placed South Yarra.
In Division 3, Dandenong went three rounds against Mount Waverley, before the Mountain Lions blew them off the board in the final term – downed 13.12 (90) to 18.14 (122). James Farrugia, Warren Kairns and Ryan Forsyth ran all day and Matt Van Schajik was a target forward with four goals.
Lyndale was edged out 15.12 (102) to Ashwood’s 20.16 (136) on the back of some good play from forwards Trevor Kumetaitis (four goals) and Matt Stuart (three). Brad Carroll was best afield.
Sandown embarrassed Black Rock, belting 32.11 (203) to the demoted club’s 6.6 (42). A forward’s field day, Clint Sheedy thumped 11 goals while Jake Chapman was unstoppable with nine of his own.
Dandenong sits third, Sandown fourth and Lyndale sixth on the SFL Division 3 ladder – with the Cobras facing the Redlegs and Pumas travelling to Hallam.
VAFA
Baby steps are starting to turn into fully-fledged running for Masala, narrowly pipped by Eley Park 8.5 (53) to 11.14 (80). After three mediocre quarters, the gears turned in the last term as Ben Nugent (four goals) stood strong and delivered the goods. The Tigers ran in six goals to two to win the quarter and inspire hopefully a four-quarter effort next week against Richmond Central at home. David Crkvenac was best afield, strong in defence in his usual manner, while Prakash Kailasanathan and Yasser Hussain were also in the best.
VWFL
St John’s slipped off the perch, losing to former Premier team Scoresby 4.3 (27) to 7.9 (51). In Jessic Krznaric’s 100th VWFL match, the JOCs couldn’t bring it home for her, with the Magpies too tall, too strong and running too hard for St John’s to deal with. Blair Kelly, Rebecca Sadler and Amanda Hancock were among the best.
An emphatic win pushed Keysbourgh to top of the ladder, defeating newcomers Whitehorse 18.14 (122) to 1.4 (10). Sharing the spoils were Riplee McLachlan, Jaimee Lambert and Natalie Cardomone, who reaped four goals each. Keysborough has the bye this weekend while St John’s travels to face Bayswater.
