Cougars’ explosive finish

By JARROD POTTER

BigV
Division 2 – round 11

WITHSTANDING the Thunder’s onslaught, Keysborough kept itself in the higher ranks of Big V’s Division 2 competition with a 79-65 win over Keilor.
Keilor threw everything at Keysborough early – snaring a 21-19 lead at quarter-time – but the Cougars did not lie down as they started to stir.
Gaining a slender lead at three-quarter-time, Keysborough exploded in the last to drop 25 points and run out 14-point victors in front of their home crowd.
Jackson Houpt (22 points) was the top Cougar while Eric Miraflores (19 points, 7 rebounds) was dishing off exceptionally throughout the clash.
The third-placed Cougars clash with Maccabi on 14 June before hosting Pakenham at home the following day from 2pm.
Keysborough’s women took another step in the right direction – sticking in the contest for a 48-65 defeat at the hands of Mornington. Heidi Van Vugt (15 points, 5 rebounds) led the Cougars’ scoresheet in only her fourth match for the club while Mel Magdich (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Tamara Booth (8 points, 5 rebounds) also impressed.
Keysborough has a bye this weekend before facing Chelsea Gulls on Saturday night away then backing up against Melbourne University on Sunday at home from 12pm.
SEABL – round 10
Dandenong blitzed the Brisbane Spartans with two crushing wins on Saturday night. The men drove in 113 to Brisbane’s 87 – Dandenong’s biggest score of the year – to emphatically stay near the top of SEABL’s Eastern conference.
The Rangers’ import pair created havoc in the Brisbane key as Daequon Montreal (25 points) and Tony Lewis (25 points, 17 rebounds) excelled while Owen Odigie (11 points) and Andrew Harms (11 points) showed the guards weren’t slacking off either.
The Rangers’ women started the Brisbane slaughter with a 84-59 victory spearheaded by Dandenong mainstay Clare Papavs (13 points, 11 rebounds) – who reeled in her first double-double of the season. Also starring were Lauren Scherf (12 points, 8 rebounds) – off only 25 minutes court-time – and Faith Probst (11 points).
The return leg of Dandenong-Brisbane clash will be played on Saturday week at Rowland Cowan Stadium in Brisbane.
