POLICE have identified Dandenong as one of 15 high-risk areas for summer road trauma.
Officers will saturate the state’s roads over the next few months during the Summer Stay road enforcement campaign with a particular focus on the top 15.
There’ll be four different operations targeting speed, alcohol and drug driving, fatigue, and driver distraction.
Assistant Commissioner for road policing Robert Hill said road users could expect to have their vehicles scanned and photographed and be breath-tested, drug-tested and speed-checked.
“We’ll be using automatic number plate recognition, drug and booze busses, mobile speed cameras, marked and unmarked police cars and motorbikes so there’ll be nowhere to hide if you shouldn’t be on the road,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner Hill said there was an increase in road trauma during holiday periods due to festive activities and more holiday-makers using rural roads.
“If you know you’re going to have a couple of drinks, leave the car at home and arrange alternative transport – it’s simple,” he said.
“If you have a long drive ahead or know you’ll be travelling on unfamiliar rods, plan the best route, take regular breaks and avoid distractions behind the wheel.”
