Skaters roll into fame

CHARLIE and Brooke are ready to roll.
The Dandenong youngsters will be among 160 skaters battling for victory in the Roll Line Sk8 Off at Caribbean Rollerama in Scoresby on 3 December.
Teams drew a random ‘music legend’ to perform to and created three-minute routines that a celebrity panel and SMS voters will judge.
The top three teams will contest the grand final on the night.
Former world champion skater Jayson Sutcliffe is hosting the evening, which he said was in the vein of an episode of a reality TV show.
“It’s going to be dynamic and different in a way that will really open up people’s eyes to our sport,” he said.
Brooke, 13, and Charlie, 12, are performing a Village People routine.
“We have been practising really hard with our other team members,” Brooke said.
“We hope that the Sk8 Off show will make other kids like us want to skate too, as skating is so much fun, it’s great exercise and you get to meet new friends.
“We are really looking forward to getting our chance to show our routine to everyone as we both love performing on skates.”
Brooke’s been skating since she was a toddler and started entering competitions when she was six.
“I enjoy the competitions because they are fun and I get to see my friends from other clubs again,” she said.
“I would like to go to the World Championships because that would be the greatest experience of my life.”
And Brooke is well on her way – she took out third place in the juvenile category at last year’s National Roller Figure Skating Championships, and second in the State competition.
She placed fourth in the cadet section at this year’s National Roller Figure Skating Championships, and second in the Victorian contest.
Charlie appeared on Channel 7 program Australia’s Got Talent two years ago with Rolling Entertainment, which made it through to the show’s grand final.
He holds the Juvenile National Boys Freeskating Champion and Juvenile Victorian Boys Freeskating Station Champion titles for last year and this year, and placed second at this year’s nationals in the open short.
Charlie’s been skating since he was about six years old, starting in learn to skate classes and progressing to private lessons and competitions.
Sk8 Off tickets will be available at the door. Caribbean Rollerama is at 1298 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby. Doors open at 7.15pm.
