THE Dandy Pig will soon reclaim pride of place in the heart of Dandenong.
The iconic neon sign will be installed at the Dandenong Market facing Lonsdale Street later this year, following extensive consultation to find the ham a home.
The pig in top and tails is believed to be one of the oldest animated neon sign in Victoria. It was first erected on Lonsdale Street in the 1950s to promote the Dandenong Hams and Bacon Factory.
It welcomed traffic crossing Foster Street from Gippsland until the factory closed in the 1980s.
The pig made a comeback at Dandenong Market in 1996 but was removed in 2009 to make way for the market’s redevelopment.
It’s now time for him to be reinstated.
Mayor Angela Long said the site was in a highly visible location and retained its early historic connections to the market and Lonsdale Street.
“Our beloved Dandy Pig has been fully refurbished and will soon be tipping his hat to the community again,” Cr Long said.
