Pizza order turned to kidnap

A BERWICK man will spend at least two years in jail over a phony pizza order that turned into a kidnap and robbery in Dandenong North.
Judge Geoffrey Chettle handed down Omar Kakar’s sentence in the County Court on 12 June.
The 24-year-old labourer pleaded guilty to one count of false imprisonment and one count of robbery over an incident on 3 October 2011 that saw a fake pizza order placed with Domino’s Pizza in Dandenong.
Two men accosted the delivery man when he arrived at the Scullin Street address provided, stole his phone, wallet and takings, put him into his car and drove him to a darkened garage.
They asked him if his boss would pay a ransom, forced him to divulge his PIN and threatened to kill him. When later left alone, he fled.
Judge Chettle said Kakar did not accost the victim in the street and was not being sentenced in relation to that activity.
There were three other men involved in the incident.
“Apparently the group of men that you were with that night are people with whom you consumed drugs, and the purpose for the robbery was to obtain money in order to feed drug habits for you and others,” Judge Chettle said.
“Your conduct would have been extremely frightening to the victim, who must have been terrified by the events of the night as a whole.”
Judge Chettle sentenced Kakar to three years in prison, two without parole.
“Your prospects of rehabilitation with the strong family support must be seen as reasonable, particularly given that you have limited prior criminal history,” he said.
