Sites on trail of settlement significance

By CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS

A second step in a trail that tells the story of how Springvale and its Enterprise Hostel welcomed 30,000 new arrivals with open arms was unveiled yesterday.
The Trail of Significant Sites now has two links – the site of the former hostel and, as of yesterday (Sunday), the Springvale Aid and Advice Bureau.
It is part of a story that shows how a harmonious community in Springvale grew out of the “extraordinary welcome” given to the hostel’s new arrivals in 1970-92, says Enterprise Hostel Community Group member Merle Mitchell.
“It’s our belief that innovative approach built the harmonious community we enjoy today.”
The bureau site, with a small rose garden, commemorates the dedicated work of bureau volunteers, particularly the late Sherron Dunbar who took hostel residents on orientation walks.
The trail, when complete, will take in other sites visited by Dunbar’s walks – such as the former Springvale Primary School and the neighbourhood house.
Ms Mitchell recalls Dunbar had a broad knowledge of world affairs so knew what migrant communities needed.
But there were many others at the bureau who were just as committed, providing settlement services such as employment, welfare, advocacy and housing.
Ms Mitchell said the trail scheme keeps growing into a project of national significance to show how a friendly welcome makes a difference for new arrivals.
“These days, I think the organisation of how we provide the support to new arrivals leaves a lot to be desired.
“We put them in the community and don’t provide them with a full income.
“Welcoming people positively ensures that they settle.
“Why we have so many migrants and asylum seekers settle in Springvale and this area is because they know they’ll be welcomed.”
Former prime minister Malcolm Fraser said in a video statement on the recently-revamped Spirit of Enterprise website: “It shows quite clearly what happens when migrants in our community are welcomed with open arms.
“Diversity becomes a strength and something that enrichens all our lives.”
