Voice for the people

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

THE demand for English tutors in migrant-rich Noble Park is ceaseless.
Volunteer tutor Marlene De Souza, in her 12th year at the AMES Noble Park program, said she hasn’t tired of helping migrants and refugees learn basic English.
She has built strong friendships and learnt much from her students, she said.
What impresses her is her clients’ hunger to learn. Mothers with several children don’t miss a class.
“I just admire their courage,” Ms De Souza said.
“When you don’t know English, it’s hard to connect to people.”
Through conversation, she equips her students with the lingual skills for everyday life such as going shopping, visiting a doctor and getting a job.
Tutors don’t need teaching qualifications or a second language, just a commitment to help for one to two house a week.
They are given training and ongoing support by AMES.
To help, phone 8558 8804 or email railicn@ames.net.au.
