Saint celebrations are Greeks’ treat

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

BAKLAVA, souvlaki and loukoumades took the limelight over the weekend as the Greek community celebrated Saint Panteleimon day and its deep roots in Dandenong.
For 56 years the Greek Orthodox Community of Dandenong and Districts has been teaching and embracing its and other cultures in the area and for the second time came together in celebration on Sunday.
Hundreds flocked to embrace the delicious delicacies on offer and tradition at the Saint Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church in Herbert Street, Dandenong.
Secretary at the church Greg Vagias said the event catered for everyone.
“There was traditional Greek food on offer, dancing and, of course, the Zorba, a jumping castle for the kids and a stall with popcorn and fairy floss run by the churches after hour’s Greek school,” Mr Vagias said.
With a DJ, marquee and lots of full tummies, Mr Vagias said it was fantastic to see everyone embracing the festival.
“It brings the community together, not just the Greek community but the wider community and allows everyone to share in the multicultural environment – it’s blending of the Australian and Greek cultures and that’s pretty cool,” he said.
