Students in step with marathon effort

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH

AIMING to walk the equivalent of Uluru in a month Yarraman Oaks Primary School is transforming their school schedule for the month of October.
A part of the school’s involvement in ‘Walk to School’ month, yoga, hiking, gardening, tennis and even belly-dancing workshops will be on offer for parents and students.
Launching ‘Walktober’ on Wednesday 7 October, the school’s Elissa Sewell said the morning had a carnival like atmosphere.
“It was a fantastic morning the students had fruit salad and yogurt for breakfast and everyone was getting into the spirit of the whole school month long event,” Ms Sewell said.
Keeping track of their steps with pedometers donated by Victoria Walks, Ms Sewell said all the steps would be counted and their total revealed at the end of the month.
“Hopefully we make it around Uluru,” she said.
The school has also introduced nude food Friday’s which means every student has to bring food to school that isn’t wrapped in plastic.
“It’s about encouraging healthy non-processed eating and on Fridays all the bins won’t get out so if students do have wrappers they will have to take them back home with them to throw away,” Ms Sewell explained.
