One shot success

By JARROD POTTER

ONE state final, one state championship win.
This incredible conversion-rate happened at this year’s School Sport Victoria Track and Field Championships as Noble Park athlete Celestine Marsters did her school proud in the 3kg shot put.
The Keysborough College – Banksia Campus student made the most of her first appearance when she found those extra few centimetres to put herself onto the top of the podium.
“I just found shot put fun to do,” Marsters said. “I like to do a bit of javelin and discus as well – I came second in the division in javelin but didn’t make it through to state.
“Every single time I’ve done shot put I’ve gone to regionals, but this is the first time I’ve gone to state.”
She was trailing throughout the girls under-14 shot put competition, but with a little chat from her teacher guided her to gold with an 11.82m throw.
“I was losing on my first two throws -I was second then my teacher and one of my friends taught me a little bit, as I didn’t know how to throw it – I just did it,” Marsters said. ““They showed me a couple of ways and I did it on my final throw and went pretty far and beat this girl.
“I was really excited – I was like ‘what!’ – I felt pretty proud.”
While she loves participating in school athletics, her heart is on court as she hopes to reach the peaks of the basketball world – the American Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in years to come.
She wanted to thank her sports teacher Mr Femino and her parents for their support.
