Spark blamed for recycle blaze

Fire destroyed a Dandenong South car recycling site and threatened neighbouring businesses and grassland.
Dandenong Fire Station officer in charge Paul Carrigg said the blaze started at the Elliott Road business just before 4pm on Tuesday 28 February.
“I’m tipping some sort of spark was caused by dismantling the cars,” he said.
“The crews quickly entered the building and extinguished the fire.
“Out the back there was grassland and the fire spread into the grassland as well.
“That caused complications.”
Mr Carrigg said the building was loaded with cars, forklifts, vehicle engines and more.
“It did take a fair bit to get it extinguished,” he said.
“It was right against another factory.
“It took the crews about 30 minutes to get under control.”
At the height of the firefight there were 13 trucks at the scene.
Crews remained on-site until about 8pm that night to monitor the smouldering ruins.
