An item flung from a silver 4WD is believed to have ignited a 300-square metre grass fire on the Westall Road Extension, Springvale on Australia Day.
The blaze started about 6.30pm, covering a 30-metre by 10-metre section of the road’s median strip between Heatherton and Rowan roads.
It was contained and extinguished by crews from Springvale CFA and Clayton MFB.
Police say that witnesses observed the item was thrown from a 4WD vehicle, possibly a BMW, in the vicinity of the fire scene.
In windy conditions, the “potentially dangerous” fire could have crossed over the road, Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars of Greater Dandenong CIU said.
The road section is bounded by trees, shrubbery and grassland in front of residential properties to the east and west.
