SFL: Dragons make their mark in a higher division

By Roy Ward

NEWLY promoted club Southern Dragons made a winning start to Southern Football League division 2 season with a win over Black Rock on Saturday.

The Dragons led all day before taking a 24-point win.

After a tumultuous off-season after the Dragons’ division 3 premiership, the club had to find a new senior coach and fill a number of places on the senior side.

Scott Hilton has taken on the coaching role while several players had their first attempt at division 2 level in Saturday’s win.

Dragons president Jamie Pi was relieved to see his club win its first division 2 game after so many challenges.

“With a new senior coach and players retiring or going overseas, we were always going to be up against it to win,” Pi said. “Going up a division and not knowing what it was all about, we had a lot of relief to get the win, and get the season off to the right start.”

New recruit Dan Rawlins and Dragons mainstay Pangnha Chhiev were best players in the win while Soeun Sang kicked four goals.

Pi said the Dragons had added a fourth senior side this season and wanted to continue to attract new players to their ranks. “Based on what we showed, we will be more than competitive this season.”
