Salvos’ Doveton Food Bank warehouse to close

IN the midst of its annual Red Shield Appeal, the Salvation Army has announced it will close its Food Bank warehouse in Doveton on July 1 to make better use of its resources.

Distribution of food in the Doveton area will not be cut but two warehouse workers will lose their jobs.

The rented warehouse stores food, toys and other goods for distribution to the charity’s op shops and community centres.

Storage and distribution will now be done from a Salvation Army warehouse in Brunswick and a Foodbank Victoria facility in Yarraville.

Major Andrew Craib said Doveton Community Support Services would continue to ‘‘service clients uninterrupted’’.

‘‘This warehouse does not directly distribute aid to people, and will therefore not affect the assistance people currently receive and will continue to receive in the future,” he said.

Major Craib said two workers — one full-time and one part-time — would lose their jobs at the warehouse, which was closed for ‘‘a better use of our money’’.

He said there would not be any delays or reduction in goods going to south-eastern suburbs.

“This rationalising sees us further utilising the resources of Food Bank Victoria for distribution of food that will continue to service people in the Doveton and wider communities.”

Major Craib said people could still donate food and goods to Doveton Community Support Services to help those in need.

Doveton Community Support Services is at 1A Frawley Road in Doveton. Details: 9793 3933.
