DANDENONG Thunder didn’t take all their chances but still found enough goals to beat Moreland Zebras 4-1 at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday night.
The Victorian Premier League leaders created numerous scoring opportunities yet continued to find ways to shoot wide or high, or find the foot of a Zebras defender.
Thunder import Luke Sherbon was the dominant striker on the night with a hat-trick while Liam Kearney’s classy goal in the first half completed the scoring.
Zebras midfielder Carl Recchia scored his side’s lone goal, smashing home a penalty early in the second half.
Thunder coach Chris Taylor praised his players for their passing but lamented their inability to finish more of their attacks.
“I’m delighted with the win,” he said. “The way we passed the ball around was much like we played at the start of the season and I think we are getting back to that sort of form. Our passing game is one of the highlights of the premier league and I think it makes a great spectacle.”
Taylor said the byplay between Sherbon and speedy striker Nate Foster was also impressive.
“Nate is getting back to his best form and I think the way he and Sherbon worked together tonight created havoc,” he said.
“We have already been hurt a few times this season when we haven’t taken our chances. In all our draws and losses I think we have had the better of the chances.”
With many VPL clubs bolstering their sides with transfers the Thunder have opted to stay with what they’ve got and Taylor said he simply found it hard to push anyone out of his side.
The Thunder hosts Northcote City this Saturday at 7pm.
