School's knack for snacks

By MARG STORK

AN apple for teacher, and a healthy lunch for the children to keep them ticking in class …

Because not every child turns up to school with a lunchbox. Some, for many reasons, can’t afford to fill one.

That’s why the teachers and staff at Dandenong North Primary School deserve full marks for their care and attention to these pupils who would otherwise go hungry.

For 20 years, the school in Cleeland Street has served up afternoon tucker to 20 or 30 children. And any child can help themselves to a bite.

“We found that some children hadn’t had breakfast and it was affecting their attention during lessons,” principal Kevin Mackay said.

The lunches are available every school day at lunch time, and with no restrictions.

Well done, Dandenong North Primary School for your commitment and initiative.

Costume capers

Over at Noble Park Secondary College, students are enjoying activities in the name of multi-culturalism.

Despite exams dominating the end of year, the students celebrated a multicultural day last month. To make it even more colourful, they turned up with costumes representing the 46 nations of their parents or grandparents.

They put on a stage show, held a flag ceremony and enjoyed a lunch with family and friends in the library.

“It was an amazing team effort from staff and students,” principal Pam Dyson gushed. “A special thank you to Lynda Chapman, who co-ordinated the events.”

Lynda, the student wellbeing co-ordinator, said it was one of the most rewarding experiences she had shared at the college.

“All thanks to the students. Their hard work led to a great concert for not only their peers but also for parents, friends and families.”

A Christmas nosh-up

Looks like everybody is counting down to the festive season. The Dandenong and District Historical Society is getting in early, sketching out plans for a Christmas lunch and its first meeting for the new year.

The two-course lunch is at the Dandenong RSL clubrooms in Clow Street at noon on Sunday, December 2. Cost is $20 a head, with one drink from the bar. Bookings and payments must be made by this Wednesday for catering arrangements.

That first meeting is at 2pm on February 17 in the administrative building at the Dandenong showgrounds in Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street.
