IN A crucial Premier League match against Melbourne University, the Dandenong Panthers put themselves in a winning position, scoring 8/285 at Shepley Oval on Saturday.
A century by opener Matthew Chasemore (111) and a half-century by middle-order batsman Adrian Burgiel (50) gave the Panthers a chance to consolidate their finals chances.
Dandenong young gun Kumar Sana showed resoluteness in his innings, but stumbled on 25 and was out off the bowling of University paceman Shawn Flegler (2/97).
Panthers coach Warren Ayres (33) impressed in the early stages of his innings and looked on the way to another mammoth total before being bowled by Alexander Cairns.
But after Ricky Damiano (27) and Tim Hooper (14) both contributed, it was clear the University batsmen would be chasing a mountainous total to put themselves into the Premier League finals.
Brendan Joseland was the pick of the University bowlers, taking 3/21 from his 14 overs.
The Panthers sit in fourth spot on the Premier League ladder with 52 points, the Melbourne University side is stuck in fifth alongside the Geelong and Melbourne sides.
