Service has its own rewards

A COMMUNITY service award is honouring a Springvale Benevolent Society stalwart.
The Wes Eggleston Community Service Award, in its second year, will be presented each February or March to co-incide with the anniversary of Mr Eggleston’s death in 2009.
He served as the Springvale Benevolent Society secretary for 40 years and was an inspiration to many, known as a stalwart of the community who selflessly assisted those most in need.
He dedicated his life to helping others, ensuring that those less fortunate were able to have the comforts and dignity that everyone deserved but could not afford.
South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Lee Tarlamis initiated the award last year for an individual who had contributed to the community and enriched the lives of others through care, compassion, courage and leadership in the City of Greater Dandenong.
It recognises their extraordinary inspiration, dedication and commitment.
The first award, last year, coincided with the Springvale Benevolent Society’s 50th anniversary and was presented to John Beus, who was a society founding member and actively involved in St Vincent de Paul and many other groups.
A selection panel including Springvale Benevolent Society president Joe Rechchi, Noble Park Community Action Forum chairwoman and Paperbark Ward councillor Roz Blades, Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau chairman Ross Hepburn, and City of Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long.
Nominations open on Monday 18 February and close on Monday 11 March.
Contact Springvale Benevolent Society on 9546 5558 or sbs@springvalebenevolent.com for more information.
