Australia Day: Our best citizens honoured

GREATER Dandenong residents have turned out to Australia Day festivities around the city today, as it welcomed new citizens and celebrated its current ones.

Craig Hancock was named citizen of the year  for his work with junior sporting clubs. After first getting involved when his son was young, he stayed on in an active role at Parkmore Junior Football Club and the Noble Park Scouts.

Afghan refugee Sahema Saberi was named young achiever of the year for her outstanding community contribution. In the seven years she has been here, the 21-year-old has worked with Afghan students and  volunteered in the emergency department at Dandenong Hospital interpreting for migrant families. 

Young achiever Guillaume Nyakaboyi received a highly commended for his work with local youth.

The good neighbour of the year was awarded to Dawn Vernon for her work with the Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood Watch group.

Graham Don took out the non-resident of the year award for his work with community organisations.

Mayor Angela Long thanked the winners and other nominees for their work.

“On behalf of our entire community I commend and thank the winners, and other worthy nominees, who give so generously to help make Greater Dandenong an even stronger, fairer and connected community,” Cr Long said.
