Dogs on death row

By Nathan Johnston
MORE than 50 dogs are in danger of being put down at the Keysborough Animal Shelter.
The shelter can legally only house a dog for a month before it is either put into foster care or put down.
Jill Womersley from the shelter said the situation had become serious.
“The shelter is full of dogs it’s overflowing.
“We’re desperately looking for people who can provide a home for a dog, big or small.”
Ms Womersley said it was difficult to know why there was a sudden increase in pets being abandoned.
“It usually happens on school holidays when people go away. Maybe it’s the cold weather.”
Ms Womersley said she hoped increased publicity would help find the dogs a home.
She said the two Dobermans featured in The Star in June were both saved when they were given homes.
To find out more about the dogs, call the Keysborough Animal Shelter on 9798 8044.
It’s located at 10 Homeleigh Road, Keysborough, and open from 10am to 3.30pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am to 3pm on Sundays.
