GREATER Dandenong Council has given an ultimatum for a Palestinian group to vacate a Springvale building next month, claiming it failed to pay six years’ rent totalling $30,000.
The Beit Jala Palestinian Association must leave the Marie Avenue Pre School Building by no later than 15 June.
Councillors this week resolved to boot the group from the dilapidated building and then demolish it.
According to a report before councillors, the Beit Jala Palestinian Association has between 40 and 60 active members of which 60 per cent reside in Greater Dandenong.
Noble Park North Ward councillor Maria Sampey told Star the group had not paid rent to council in six years – a total of $30,000.
The council resolution passed on Monday night asks Beit Jala to make a ‘meaningful offer’ on the outstanding debt via correspondence to council chief, John Bennie.
The council also showed goodwill by agreeing to accept another application from the association to use another suitable facility.
