MORE police officers on the Greater Dandenong beat have reduced street violence and thefts, say police.

Since October, reported assaults in Greater Dandenong have dropped about 10 percent and robberies by more than 15 per cent.

During that time, the Safe Suburbs Taskforce was launched to crack down on crime in parts of Dandenong, Cranbourne, Noble Park, Springvale and Narre Warren.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Pregnall said getting back to “old-fashioned policing” had got police officers “out and about”.

“We were looking at a new way to tackle things. We know who the offenders are and what is going on in the community. And we will continue to crack down on anyone found to be committing crime in the Dandenong area.”

He said issues with young people drinking and “carrying on” in parks and other public places was disappearing. “We’ve got families feeling safer and enjoying being back at the parks.”

Taskforce members confiscated more than 45 weapons, arrested more than 170 people for drunk and disorderly offences, about 70 for assaults and 40 for drug offences.
