Traders fail to catch on

CENTRAL Dandenong’s peak retail body is disappointed with a poor turnout to a sales seminar conducted by one of the city’s most experienced traders.
Ian Loft, owner of the highly successful fishing and angling supply store Compleat Angler, conducted a sales seminar for retailers at the Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association (DRTA) meeting on Tuesday 4 March.
But DRTA chairman Roy Aspinall said only a dozen retailers arrived to listen to Mr Loft, whose business is known not only in Victoria but throughout Australia as a leader in its field.
“We are fortunate to have someone with Ian’s expertise as a member and are both grateful, and fortunate, that he agreed to pass on so much of his knowledge,” Mr Aspinall said.
“All those present gained a great deal from his presentation but it is just unfortunate that not more retailers avail themselves of such great opportunities.”
Mr Aspinall said traders who didn’t attend had missed out on an opportunity of a lifetime.
“Ian did his presentation but then went for at least another half hour when people didn’t want to go home,” he said.
“They wanted to listen to each other discuss what they had learned.”
But it’s not too late for central Dandenong traders to ride the DRTA wave of support, with the group meeting monthly and always welcoming new members.
General meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month in the President’s Room at the Grand At Dandenong, 139-155 Thomas Street, Dandenong, at 6pm.
“All retailers are welcome, be they members or not, but we do hope that all retailers will eventually join,” Mr Aspinall said.
“Tea and coffee is supplied, and as well as our speakers there are normally Victoria Police members plus council representatives in attendance to provide information and for those present to discuss issues with.
“VicUrban has also assured us that they will have a representative at most general meetings.”
