Police issued 1103 penalty notices during a major traffic blitz to tackle road fatalities in the South-East.
Operation Prominent ran throughout Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia from Thursday 10 to Saturday 19 August.
During the operation, police conducted 4388 preliminary breath tests.
The penalty notices issued related to speeding, alcohol, drugs, distraction, seatbelts and fatigue.
“We make no excuses for challenging this behaviour, pulling people over who are speeding, intercepting people who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and prosecuting them to the full extent of the law,” Inspector Tom Nairn said.
In the region, 18 people have died on the road this year – the highest of any police division in Victoria.
Eleven of those fatalities could be attributed to poor decision making and driver behaviour, Inspector Nairn said.
Police would use every measure such as impounding vehicles and dragging people before the courts to crack down on these high-risk drivers, he said.
