A KEYSBOROUGH teen will make his first appearance on centre court at the Australian Open this month.
After successfully completing a series of tests in November and December, fourteen-year-old Alex Johnstone was chosen to be an MLC Ballkid at the prestigious tennis event at Melbourne Park.
The Haileybury College student was tested for fitness, ball skills and his attitude towards the role he would play during the Australian Open.
Alex who started playing tennis when he was eight-years-old, said his love of the game and having fun inspired him to apply for the role.
“I decided to become an MLC Ballkid so I could meet some of the world’s best tennis professionals and at the same time have some fun.”
Alex said he hoped to meet some of his favourite players during the tournament, including Gael Monfils and Roger Federer.
“Gael Monfils is my favourite player because in many ways my style is similar to his. I think he is a good tennis player,” he said.
“It would be good if I could be a ballkid during a Roger Federer match too.”
Alex is currently juggling training and playing his own game of tennis twice a week, while participating in training sessions for his role at the Australian Open.
He was one of 300 MLC Ballkids from around Australia and the Asia Pacific chosen to assist the tennis champions.
MLC’s Head of Marketing, Brant and Insight Christina Walker said although it was a demanding role, being an MLC Ballkid was the “experience of a lifetime.”
“MLC Ballkids watch the world’s best players in action, learn new skills and make friends, while enjoying the lifestyle and health benefits of tennis,” she said.“We are proud to give young people this valuable experience.”
